Peniche, Portugal
A peninsula jutting into the Atlantic with waves on four sides — home to Supertubos, one of Europe's best beach break barrels.
Peniche sits on a peninsula, which means there's almost always a sheltered side no matter what the wind is doing. That geography makes it unusually reliable. The star is Supertubos — a powerful, hollow beach break that hosts the Rip Curl Pro Ericeira (formerly WSL Peniche) every October, and which ranks consistently among Europe's best barrels. Baleal, a short drive north, is beginner and intermediate territory with a long beach and gentle sandbank waves. The town itself is a working fishing port — less polished than Ericeira but with a rawness that serious surfers tend to prefer.

Only the second World Surf Reserve in Europe — six classified breaks packed into a few kilometres of dramatic Atlantic coastline.

Portugal's sun-drenched south coast — warmer, wilder, and less crowded, with dramatic cliff-backed breaks at Sagres and Arrifana.
Surf within 30 minutes of a European capital — Costa da Caparica stretches 30km south of the city with consistent beach break peaks.
