Surfing in Algarve

The Algarve gets less attention than Ericeira or Peniche, but it earns its place on a Portuguese surf itinerary. The south-west corner around Sagres and the Costa Vicentina is a protected natural park — no high-rises, no beach clubs, just raw Atlantic breaks at Arrifana, Carrapateira, and Amado backed by orange sandstone cliffs. The water is warmer, the crowds are thinner, and the pace is slower. Best surfed in autumn and spring; summer brings onshore winds to many spots.
