Macaronis Resort
Pasongan Island
An archipelago of perfect tropical reef breaks off Sumatra — boat charters, luxury surf resorts, and a wave count that reads like a hall of fame.
The Mentawai Islands are the most concentrated cluster of world-class waves on the planet. HT's (Hollow Trees), Macaronis, Rifles, Lance's Right, Bank Vaults, Telescopes — every wave is a name that means something to anyone who's watched a Kelly Slater highlight reel. There are essentially two ways to surf the Mentawais: a 10-night boat charter that island-hops between breaks based on swell and wind, or a land-based stay at one of a few high-end resorts positioned in front of a specific wave. Both paths are expensive by Indonesian standards — the Mentawais are not a budget destination — but for advanced surfers chasing consistent overhead reef on glass, nothing else comes close.
The world's most famous surf island — Uluwatu's reefs in the south, Canggu's beach breaks in the centre, and a coastline that bends to every swell direction.
Bali's quieter neighbour — Gerupuk's seven breaks across a sheltered bay, Selong Belanak's long beginner waves, and Desert Point's legendary left out west.
Wilder and emptier than Lombok — Lakey Peak's perfect A-frame and a tight cluster of consistent reefs in the Hu'u district with almost nobody on them.
